I am a numpty

This morning I went into my locker in the gym, and noticed my running shoes weren’t there. I’ve a habit of not picking stuff up, so realised I’d left them in the changing room on Friday after I’d been for a run.
I checked if they’d been handed in, but no joy.
In the changing room, the cleaner was washing the floor, and I asked him if he’d remembered seeing a pair of trainers lying there last week. He said he’d seen a pair of blue New Balance trainers on the Friday morning, lying next to a bench, with no clothes or bags near them, and took me to the front desk and asked the girl there to get them for me. Again she checked and said they weren’t there.
When I asked him if he’d handed them in he said no!
Next question was “How did you expect them to be handed in? Someone has stolen them!”

Yeah it’s my fault and I now need to buy new running shoes, but seriously, he saw them lying on their own and DIDN’T put them in lost property!

I didn’t go running (no shoes), so a wee impromtpu yoga session took place instead.

Update and Alien movies.

That was a pretty good weekend. Made some chilli, coconut and lime chicken, did some yoga, went to the garden centre and had hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream, and finslly saw Alien Covenant, which I really liked.
I’d heard mixed opinions of the new Alien movie, but the naysayers were mostly people I know who like hard SF in book form, and hold SF media in disdain, so I’m not listening to their opinion. That aside, if it was a franchise I liked, I’d still go, and make my own mind up about a film. For example, I love the Star Wars movies, BUT can’t stand Jar-Jar Binks. A character so irritating, you were praying for him to be taken out the gene pool. If we could get a special edition of Phantom Menace WITHOUT Jar-Jar, I’d gladly put up with the holes in the story.

This morning before work I met up with a colleague and went for a run. Nothing spectacular as it’s been ages since either of us ran, so just a comfortably paced 3k or so to get the legs and the lungs used to running again. Felt great to be out running. I’d forgotten how much I used to love it.

(Dug out my Nostromo baseball cap since it seemed approptiate considering my viewing at the weekend)

That went better than expected

Anyone who’s read this blog for a while will probably be aware that I used to run regularly – I was a member of Bellahouston Road Runners, and regularly entered 10k’s, half-marathons, and did 1 marathon – before somehow falling out of the habit.  I’ve tried to keep going by myself, but find it hard to motivate or push myself, so just kept doing the same route in the same time, and wasn’t improving at all but just ticking over.
Today s work colleague wanted to get back into running after a long lay-off, so at lunchtime, we headed out for a loop of about 5k.
There was a bit of walk/run/walk/run involved, but you know, it didn’t matter.  We were out, and we were running, and it’s better to start getting back into it like this, than to try and burst a gut, and get disillusioned all over again.

Hopefully this is going to continue, but I’m happy at the moment to take it slow and see how it goes.

Running update

This morning I went for my 5.5k route through the park next to my house.
It wasn’t great today, my legs felt like lead.

I know I’ve only been back running for three weeks, and it’s after a gap of 5 or 6 years, but it’s hard not to let the head games get the better of you.  In my mind I’ve not really had that long lay-off, and I should be able to go for a “wee 10 miler*” as I used to refer to them, or push it a wee bit if I’ve got time, and do 15 miles.

I know the problem isn’t physical, the stamina will come, my muscles will get used to running again (at the moment they seem to be confused that I’m using them in a different way to cycling, and they aren’t keen on it), the breathing is ok too, it’s just head games.  My brain is trying to psyche me out.

I need to get back to running with other people, to distract me from this.  When I run on my own I have too much time to let my mind wander and scream “What are you doing?  Give up.”  I’m not giving up.  No way.

So, I need to persevere, vary the routes, do some hill reps and/or shorter faster sessions.  I also need a running buddy to stop me slacking.  That’s what I loved about running with the club, but until I’m up to the minimum pace, that’s not a realistic option.

So, any tips to avoid you’re mind psyching you out on a solo run would be greatly appreciated 😀

(*my wife thought I’d crossed a line, when 10 miles was referred to as a “wee” run).

Active day

Yesterday I cycled to work (approx 10k), at lunchtime I went for a wee run (4.3k according to Strava), and then cycled the 10k home again.  I’m pretty happy about the fact that my level of fitness is improving, and I’m enjoying what I’m doing.
Saying that, I still have motivational issues when it comes to karate.  There’s a few times I’ve thought that if Karen wasn’t coming along too, I’d have given up (although, once I get to the class I do enjoy it).

So, regular exercise, and trying to cut out the junk when it comes to food (struggling with that a bit though.  Why is it that the tasty food is the worst for you?).

Back running

Over the weekend, I managed to get out for my first run this year.
I’ve been really lazy, and got the “can’t be arsed” stage, as it seemed like a huge wall was up between me and running, but on Saturday night, I left out the running gear, and on Sunday morning I got up and went out.  I have to admit I almost didn’t as it was raining, but I thought “Sod it.” and went anyway.

At 7.00am, I pretty much had Pollok estate to myself, and only saw another 3 or 4 people running.  I’m really lucky to have this park literally on my doorstep, and sometimes I take it for granted.

The rain was soon forgotten (I have always had a problem setting out in the rain.  I don’t mind it starting once I’m out, but seeing it rain before I set off makes it hard for me to get out the door) and I was quickly just enjoying the run and the “me” time.

As I haven’t run in about six months, I took it easy, and just did a wee loop that comes in at just under 5.5k.  A nice wee easy pace too.

Thighs were a bit achey the next day, but in a good way.  I also felt really good for the rest of the day.  That’s one of the things I love about running.  I always feel better about myself and life in general when I’m running.  My wife thinks I’m a lot happier a person and more positive when I run, so it does have benefits for mental well-being as well as physical health benefits.

Anyway, here’s a wee pic from a few years ago when I was a member of Bellahouston Road Runners (when I get back up to speed, I plan to re-join).  I’m the one in the purple vest.

Oooft!

There was some over-indulgence of the weekend courtesy of the Paisley Beer Festival (excellent timing, as we avoided the crowds) and the single malt collection in the house.  It was fun, but it’s time to knock it on the head and get back into training.

With that in mind, it’s time to get running again.  I’ve not got the excuse that stopped me over the winter (snow and ice on the roads) and I can always use the treadmill in the gym at work if that’s the case, so time to man up, get out there, and get the painful bit over and done with, so I can get back to enjoying running again.

I’ve not been vegging out completely though, I’ve been back on the bike with a vengence, so hopefully it’ll be a fairly gradual climb back to where I was at when winter made me wimp out.

Running vs The Rest of the World

I’ve pretty much not been running lately (I think I’ve only been out 3 times this year, which is not good).  BUT I am back on the bike, I’ve been at the gym (where the treadmill gets used) and I’m still going to karate.

I think I’m getting things in balance, and much as I loved running and entering races, I think that it’s place in my life is something that I’ll do once in a while because I want to, and not something to do because I feel I have to. (this of course is subject to change at very short notice, depending on the weather, my mood, if I fancy a run, or if I just get the urge again).

I’m enjoying being back on the bike and I’m planning a second bike (I was going for a road bike, but think I’ll actually get a cross, as Glasgow’s roads aren’t exactly road bike friendly), so I think realistically the cycling will be taking over from the running.  Instead of a 5 mile run, a 10 mile ride, that sort of thing.

Anyway, like I say, it’s all subject to change, that’s just the state of the nation at the moment.

Back pounding away (sort of)

Still not managed an outdoor run this year.  Today was only my second run of the the year and again, it was on the treadmill (5k).

Is it just me?  I always seem to find it harder running on a treadmill than on the road.  I can never seem to get the speed “just right”, and it’s always a little too fast or weirdly “just” too slow.  It’s really annoying.

I need to just man up and get the wet weather gear on, and get out on the road.

New running shoes – update

So I got fed up with the weather not being conducive to a nice little outdoor run to test out the new shoes, to see if they would indeed be new running shoes, or consigned to gym only shoes, so I took them for a wee 3k test trot on the treadmill in the gym.

I’m happy to report that they seemed to perform well, despite the general online opinion predominantly being that Karrimor – good outdoor gear, rubbish running shoes.  They’re comfy, and they’re lighter than my Asics that I usually use.  There was no muscle pain from running in the “wrong” shoes, and I now just need to try them on the road on a longer run to give them the final thumbs up.

For the money I paid, it wouldn’t have mattered if they were no use to run in, but the fact that so far they seem to be fine, means I’ve snagged an amazing bargin.
