Yesterday I got a little letterbox droppage with two books. The first is Siddhartha by Herman Hess, on the recommendation of my wife who read it long before we met, and thought I’d like it.
The second is the Bhagavad Gita. I did have a go at reading this before, but the copy I had had been given to me by the Hare Kirishnas, and between the passages, was the original Sanskrit, and then an explanation of the meaning of the passage, which while I appreciated being given the book, made it a bit of an effort to read – skip the Sanskrit as I can’t read it, read the passage, then read the explanation before reading the next passage.
I wanted to read a straightforward translation and see what I got out of it, not what someone else said I should get.
So with that in mind, and after reading reviews of different translations, I went for one by Eknath Easwaren.
I’m looking forward to reading these.
So we’ve got the trip for this year booked, and I can’t wait.
We’re off to Thailand. Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Bangkok, with 3 days in Dubai to break up the flight home.
I’ve been to Bangkok before for a couple of days on the way to Bali, and I wasn’t expecting to like it, but I really loved it. It’s a fantastic city. I’m looking forward to a three weeks of superb food and of course, there’s going to be yoga by the pool, and in the case of Phuket, on the beach. Can’t wait.
In the meantime, having done a reasonable dvd cull, I’ve moved onto cd’s. The downsizing continues. We have to avoid stuffication.
I got an email from the teacher who takes the vinyasa flow class that I go to every week. Starting in March she’s doing a six week introduction to Ahstanga yoga, and thought I might be interested and would benefit from it. So this morning I signed up. I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been to a workshop that she recommended at the same studio, and loved it.
I’ve got 4 days left to run on the free pass for the gym/spa that we’ve been using since the 2nd. I’ve been using the pool and doing 20 lengths every evening before chilling out in the jacuzzi and the steam room.
I don’t usually get swimming that often these days, unless I’m on holiday, so I’ve been taking advantage of the free pass to swim every day.
I’ve not posted at all over the festive period. It’s not that I hadn’t been up to anything, but I tried (and sort-of) failed a digital detox. I succeeded in not turning on the computer, but I have Instagram and Facebook on my phone, so I posted photos on insta, and used Fb to keep in touch with friends and organise some social activities.
We went to a 40th birthday, and a wedding reception. Had a walk along a bitterly cold beach, and went sledging. We ate too much, and took advantage of a free 12 day pass to a gym/spa.
But, now I’m back, and hopefully I’ll have something better to post than this!!!
To anyone who follows me and is reading this, a Happy New Year to you all, and I hope 2018 is a good year for you.
