Monthly Archives: September 2017

That was a pretty good weekend.

On Saturday, we had our monthly games night, where we played Settlers of Catan and Cards Against Humanity.
It’s only the second time we’ve played Settlers, but we’re starting to see how it could be a pretty brutal game where it comes to doing over the other players.
Fortunately by the time Richard realised how much I’d scored on the board and potentially what I had in my hand, I was only one round away from winning, and took the game without the others realising I was about to win.
It’s important to try and work how close others are to winning to decide if and how you’re going to trade with them.
Great game.

Yesterday we headed out of Glasgow to climb Dumgoyne a wee volcanic plug of a hill. It might be relatively small, but it’s pretty steep.
We’ve climbed this three or four times in the past, and the views from the top are stunning, but this time we got about 3/4 of the way up, and met the cloud coming down. It wasn’t a good idea to carry on, so we headed back to the car.

Once off the hill it was into the car and up to Aberfoyle for a coffee. We lost Mia en route, as she doesn’t seem to understand that “road closed” and “diversion” means she has to follow the signs, so while we arrived in Aberfoyle, she got lost, ended up back at Dumgoyne, and just headed home.
From Aberfoyle, we decided to stop off in Drymen, seeing as we had to pass it thanks to the diversion.

Finally we headed home to some well deserved dinner and some Netflix.

First yoga workshop

On Saturday I went to my first yoga workshop. It was called Vira Rasa – The Essence of the Warrior, and was taught by Coral Brown who had come over from the States, and took place at Merchant City Yoga in Glasgow.

Not having been to a yoga workshop before I didn’t know what to expect, but really enjoyed it.

Over 2 1/2 hours we got the meanings of the names of the various warrior poses, and some Hindu mythology that backed up the meanings, along with lots of flow yoga through the variations of the warrior pose.

I didn’t think I’d manage a class that long, but you get totally immersed, and end up “in the moment” so that you don’t even notice the passing of time.

All too soon the time had passed and it was finally Savasana time.

I have to say that Susan – teaches the class I regularly attend – was right when she recommended this workshop to me. I really felt that I got a lot out of it, and was definitely in a different head space by the end of it.

Would I do another workshop? Totally. It was a great experience.

Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely. It’s two days since I did it, and I’m realising I got more out of it than just a good stretch. It’s definitely changed my mental state. I was pretty stressed out last week, and now I’m a lot calmer.

It was also the first time I’d done “om” at the end of a class, and the sensation when everyone started harmonising really energised the room, it was amazing.

Great weekend

Just had a brlliant weekend.
It was my wife’s birthday, and I’d booked a meal and a hotel in Largs for her.
On the way there we stopped off in Ayr for a wander and some lunch, and then headed to Loch Doon castle (on the shores of Loch Doon), where we met Bob, who played the clarinet for Karen and recited some poetry.
Bob and his friends where doing a spot of wild camping and have been working the festival circuit. It was a fantastic surprise. He was a genuinely nice guy and Karen loved being serenaded.

Dinner in Largs was really nice. Tinto Tapas does great food, but like all tapas places in Scotland, missed the fact that tapas should be small cheap plates, not small expensive plates. £4 – £5 a plate is pretty standard for tapas here, and it’s not cheap when you consider the size of plate you get for that.
Tinto do 3 for £10 as long as you’re there before 7.00pm, which we were, so it worked out great value.

The hotel – Wood House Hotel – was really nice. Seriously comfy bed, and a really nice breakfast the next day.
